Antique Lacquered Wood Tsuba with Botanical Motifs

Antique Japanese tsuba crafted in wood with a black lacquer finish, adorned with fine botanical motifs. The lacquer, of a deep black hue, shows several losses visible in the photos.

The Tsuba were usually made of metal (iron, copper, shakudō, etc.) to ensure durability and protection. However, in certain cases, tsuba can be found in more delicate materials such as lacquered wood. These examples were not intended for combat, but likely had ceremonial, theatrical, or decorative purposes, or were mounted on parade swords (kazari-tō).
