The Uyghurs are a Turkic-speaking people of predominantly Muslim tradition, historically settled in Central Asia and particularly in the Xinjiang region, in present-day western China. Their culture is the result of the encounter between different traditions of Central Asia, along the ancient trade routes that connected East and West. Silverworking and refined decorative techniques, including filigree, occupy an important place in the Uyghur goldsmithing tradition and reflect the influence of the Islamic cultures of Central Asia.
